Salt Mine in Wieliczka

Horses have be used in this mine since the early days when they were lowered down the shaft on ropes and because of the stress involved in this procedure once down horses stayed down for the rest of their lives. Although the mine closed in 1979 the very last horse, Daisy, remained in the mine while an argument raged as to whether or not the stress of roping her to the surface would kill her. She was brought to the surface in 2005 and had three years retirement before her death in 2008.
