Methane gas is also a problem in the mine this was first resolved by a group of the most experienced miners going into the mine each morning with soaking wet clothing and using a flaming torch on a pole “burn off” the gas. Today a ventilation system and a series of double doors that form airlocks keep the mine safe from gas build up, it is however totally forbidden to smoke or produce any form of naked flame anywhere in the mine.
