Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum

The men fit to work and young women were usually separated from mothers who remained with their children as it was felt both mothers and children would be easier to handle. Most of the time they went from the train that brought them direct to the gas chambers along with old people and those unfit to work.
