In Germany virtually every bottle is returnable and a deposit charged, including plastic water and pop bottles but excluding wine bottles. They are returned to a machine set in the wall of every supermarket, loose bottles at the top and crates full of empties at the bottom. The machine checks the bar code to confirm it is a product stocked by them then racks you up a credit for every bottle and/or crate you return. when finished you press a button and a voucher printed that the shop will swap for cash or goods. Great idea.
